Why explore Osum Canyon?
Osum Canyon is a limestone river canyon and natural monument in the Skrapar region, near Çorovodë. Its defining feature is the Osum River cutting between steep rock walls, creating markedly different views from the rim and the riverbed.
The canyon brings a substantial nature excursion to an itinerary centred on Berat’s historic architecture. It can be appreciated through a simple sequence of viewpoints or explored more actively on foot or through a pre-arranged river experience.

Getting to Osum Canyon
A car or organised tour is the simplest way to connect the canyon’s dispersed viewpoints; public transport reaches Çorovodë rather than the complete attraction.
Ways to experience the canyon

The rim, river and longer walking route reveal different aspects of Osum Canyon; water level determines which river experiences are practical.
For a first visit, use the rim viewpoints to understand the canyon’s scale before deciding whether to add a longer walk or booked river activity. These are separate experiences with different access points and levels of effort.
Plan your time on site
What to see
- Canyon Rim ViewpointsRoadside viewpoints provide the broadest overview of the limestone gorge and the Osum River below. Their short approaches make it practical to stop at several points rather than treating the canyon as a single lookout.
- Osum RiverA pre-arranged river trip gives a close view of the canyon walls and narrow passages. Higher spring flows are associated with rafting, while lower summer and autumn water can support tubing, swimming or river walking, depending on conditions.
- Canyon-Rim CircuitThe full circuit is about 18 km, usually taking five to six hours with roughly 500 metres of ascent. Some sections run beside paved roads, so it is a substantial outing rather than a continuous wilderness trail.
- River-Access AreasSome access points have pebble shores or places to enter the water, occasionally beside restaurants, picnic areas or camping facilities. They are separate local areas rather than a continuous riverside path.
Plan ahead
- Osum Canyon has no single formal entrance or visitor centre tying the experience together. Viewpoints, river-access areas and activity departure points are spread across the area, while services appear only in selected locations. A quick stop can deliver impressive views, but exploring several sections requires more time and coordination.
- Food and drink Limited and localised — Restaurants or small buffets occur at some access points, not throughout the canyon.
- River access At selected areas — Pebble shores and swimming entry are limited to particular access points.
- Walking shoes Bring sturdy footwear — Useful for dirt tracks, rocky river access and the longer rim route.
- Water and sun care Bring your own supplies — Carry enough for exposed viewpoints, walks and river-access areas.
Is Osum Canyon right for you?
Best suited to
- Scenery-focused road trippers — Several roadside stops provide contrasting views along the limestone gorge without requiring the full rim circuit.
- Seasonal adventure travellers — Spring rafting and lower-water summer activities provide distinctly different ways to experience the gorge.
- Active walkers — The 18 km rim circuit suits visitors prepared for a five- to six-hour outing, roughly 500 metres of ascent and sections beside paved roads.
- Berat-based visitors — The canyon adds a major landscape excursion to a stay otherwise focused on culture and history.
May not suit
- Transport-dependent day trippers — Public transport reaches Çorovodë, but the remaining viewpoints and river-access areas require separate local transport.
- Visitors avoiding winding roads — The approach includes winding sections, while road surfaces and side-road conditions can vary.
- Spontaneous river participants — River activities depend on water levels, weather and operator availability, so they should be arranged before arrival.
Families can use the roadside viewpoints, but suitability for rafting, tubing or river walking depends on each participant’s age and fitness, current conditions and the operator’s requirements.

Osum Canyon visitor questions
Practical answers to help you plan your visit.
What changes when the river level falls?
Lower water reveals more of the rocky riverbed and changes which guided activities are offered. It can favour swimming, tubing or river walking, but conditions and available routes still vary.
Can Osum Canyon and Bogovë Waterfall be combined?
They can form a full-day nature outing from the area. Keep the plan flexible because adding a booked river activity or the long rim circuit leaves less time for a second stop.
Is there a continuous path beside the river?
Do not expect a developed riverside promenade. River access is concentrated at particular areas, and the long walking option follows the rim with some sections beside paved roads.
Should I use Berat or Çorovodë for an early activity?
Çorovodë is the more practical overnight base for local access. Berat offers a wider cultural stay but involves a longer transfer before reaching canyon activity or viewpoint locations.
Can I improvise a rafting trip on arrival?
Do not rely on it. Rafting depends on suitable water levels and operator availability, so confirm the activity and meeting point before travelling.
